Timothy W. Floyd retired as the Tommy Malone Distinguished Chair in Trial Advocacy and Professor of Law. He taught a variety of courses in criminal law, civil procedure, and legal ethics. Until 2023, he served as Director of Experiential Education at Mercer, supervising clinical and externship programs. Floyd has published three books and is the author of numerous articles in the area of legal ethics, law and religion, and criminal law and the death penalty. His most recent book is The Formation of Professional Identity: The Path from Student to Lawyer (with Patrick Longan and Daisy Hurst Floyd; second edition 2024). Floyd devotes much of his service to access to justice issues, and he has represented several defendants in death penalty cases, including the first person convicted under the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994.
He received a B.A and an M.A. from Emory University and his J.D from the University of Georgia, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Georgia Law Review. He previously taught at the University of Georgia School of Law, where he was Director of the Legal Aid Clinic, and at Texas Tech University School of Law, where he was the J. Hadley Edgar Professor of Law and Co-Director of Clinical Programs.
His most recent book is The Formation of Professional Identity: The Path from Student to Lawyer (with Pat Longan and Daisy Floyd). While teaching at several law schools in his career, he has represented persons facing the death penalty and worked to insure access to justice for all in civil cases.
Daisy Hurst Floyd is a retired University Professor of Law and Ethical Formation and served as Dean of the Law School from 2004 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2017. She came to Mercer in 2004 after serving on the faculties of the University of Georgia School of Law and Texas Tech University School of Law. Professor Floyd is admitted to the State Bars of Georgia and Texas and is an elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia, and the Texas Bar Foundation.
Professor Floyd is the author of numerous law review articles and is a frequent speaker at academic and law conferences. Her teaching and research interests include Ethics, Legal Education, Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Remedies. She has a particular interest in the ways in which higher education shapes students’ ethical development and in the possibilities for cross-disciplinary collaboration within higher education.
Recent research projects have focused on professional identity development of lawyers. She is the co-author of a 2019 book, The Formation of Professional Identity: The Path From Student to Lawyer, and is currently working on a book tentatively entitled, The Lawyers We Need: The Professional Identity of the American Lawyer, scheduled for publication by Carolina Academic Press in the Fall of 2022.
Professor Floyd is an elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia, and the Texas Bar Foundation, and is admitted to the State Bars of Georgia and Texas. She has served on numerous professional committees, including currently serving as a member of the ABA Professionalism Committee and formerly as a member of the ABA President’s Council on Diversity in the Profession, the State Bar of Georgia Diversity Program Committee, and the Macon Bar Association Advisory Committee. She is a Master of the William Augustus Bootle Inn of Court in Macon, Georgia.
Professor Floyd was raised in Savannah, Georgia, received both the B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from Emory University and a J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law. She is married to Professor Tim Floyd, her college and law school classmate. They have two children and three grandchildren.
Professor Floyd retired from Mercer Law at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
