Professor Dantzler was a native of Macon and earned both undergraduate and law degrees from Mercer University. She joined the Mercer Law faculty in 1978 after eight years of private practice. She taught Trial Practice, Advanced Trial Practice, and Problems in Trial Evidence. She was particularly active in the Moot Court and Mock Trial programs.
Before bringing her interest in skills training to the law school, Dantzler was a member of the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA, Southeast Region) and the National College for Criminal Defense (NCCD, Houston). In 1985, after NCCD was discontinued in Houston, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers selected Mercer Law as the host for its successor, the National Criminal Defense College (NCDC) and in 1985 appointed Professor Dantzler as Dean. The NCDC named its trial practice institute in honor of Professor Dantzler. The Deryl Dantzler Trial Practice Institute is the original, transformative, two-week trial skills program designed exclusively for criminal defense practitioners.
Professor Danzler passed away on Dec. 28, 2022.
